Alvarez Scores Unanimous Decision Victory Over Munguia
In a showdown between Mexican fighters, undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (61-2-2, 39KO) turned away challenger Jaime Munguia (43-1, 34KO).
It was an electric crowd in attendance as they cheered both fighters from the opening bell. Munguia, being the younger fighter, fought with more energy. He did a good job of using the jab and finished every combination with a body shot.
Canelo has been in these moments plenty of times and stepped up on the defense. He did a good job of landing hard counter shots and started going to the body. In round four, the undisputed champion landed a thunderous uppercut that put the younger challenger on the canvas.
As the fight continued, Alvarez’s defense, timing, and counterpunching was a huge factor in taking over the fight. Canelo started landing punches at will as Munguia never took his head off the centerline.
Going into the championship rounds, Munguia refused to wilt and threw several punches in bunches. He continued to come forward and attack the champ.
Alvarez’s sharp countershots were lethal as he couldn’t miss with it. It was clear he was in full control of the fight.
The judges score cards were 117-110, 116-111, and 115-112 for Canelo.
With this fight in the books, the fight everyone awaits is Canelo vs two-time WBC champion David Benavidez.
