Canelo Alvarez Says He Is A Level Above David Benavidez
Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (58-2-2, 39 KOs) has heard the chatter about a potential matchup with two-time WBC champion David “The Red Flag” Benavidez (27-0, 23 KOs). But according to Alvarez, one thing differentiates him from The Red Flag.
THERE ARE LEVELS TO THIS
Alvarez is the undisputed champion at 168. He’s been making the media rounds to promote his May 6 fight against WBO Interim super middleweight champion John Ryder.
But despite his upcoming title defense, Benavidez is on the brain of many a boxing observer. During an exclusive interview with media outlet Fight Hub TV, the Mexican superstar was asked about his thoughts on Benavidez and said the following:
“He’s (Benavidez) a good fighter, but look, I’m a great fighter.”
PAST VERSUS PRESENT
The redhead has fought and defeated elite competition from 154-175 over the last decade. Canelo is a four-division world champion and ranked sixth in the latest 3kingsboxing.com Top Ten Fighter rankings. So, based on his accomplishments and resume, Alvarez is not wrong to make that distinction.
However, when talking about a potential contest, fighting styles also matter. Benavidez is a big, tall, rangy fighter who can box and punch. Offensively, the 26-year-old can box and fight on the inside with equal success. He also carries plenty of power and has underrated defense and hand speed. The 26-year-old has the tools to give Canelo fits.
There’s a growing contingent of insiders who believe Benavidez would beat Alvarez. They include ex-WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder.
Benavidez is calling for a fight with Alvarez and on paper, it would make for a great battle. The debate between Alvarez and Benavidez will continue to rage on. Fans hope all the talk leads to them getting in the ring.
