Canelo Alvarez: Boxing’s Cash Cow!

Unified middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez and Golden Boy Promotions have the entire boxing world in the palm of their hands!

Boxing’s biggest star has inherited the business of being the money man since the retirement of Floyd “Money” Mayweather. Whether you like him or not, its clear that some of Golden Boy’s calculations are now paying dividends.

The 28-year old celebrity’s popularity has even withstood the controversies surrounding him. There’s the questionable draw in the first fight with then-unified champion Gennady Golovkin.

Then, there is the “Canelo-weights” where he is known for setting weight stipulations mainly for smaller fighters (with exception to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr) to meet him at a favorable catchweight.

Also, of course, there are the favorable scorecards from judges.

This rise in popularity became evident early on in his sole career defeat by Floyd Mayweather. Ironically, Alvarez received a favorable scorecard (a draw) from one judge against the former boxing mega-star in fight that was a clear defeat.

Other issues range from failed PED tests for tainted meat to being elevated by the WBC to franchise champion to avoid facing mandatory challenger Jermall Charlo. It’s apparent that nothing curves the momentum for Golden Boy’s biggest earner.

The Reason

Behind it all is boxing’s largest financial base, his loyal Mexican fans. It’s plays a huge factor in team Alvarez’s ability to maneuver with impunity.

They also routinely take over the famous Mexican holiday dates of May and September.

Then, there’s the resume. Alvarez has names and titles that add to his accolades. The famed fighter has managed winning titles in two divisions, while capturing wins over named fighters like Kermit Cintron, Shane Mosley, Austin Trout, James Kirkland, Erislandy Lara, Alfredo Angulo, Liam Smith and Miguel Cotto.

These were only the beginning ingredients that would ultimately lead us to where we are today.

The Right Time

By continuing to build the Canelo brand, Golden Boy struck at the perfect moment with a multi-year $365 million deal signing with European streaming app giant DAZN.

That precise moment put the boxing world on notice that Golden Boy and Team Alvarez are in full control of the sport.

For further proof, look to the continued call-outs from other fighters looking to land the Golden ticket fight with the Mexican star.

Their reach has even caused a domino effect on other divisions. When respective WBO and WBA champions Sergiy Kovalev and Callum Smith heard their names mentioned as possible opponents, they put plans on hold.

Recently we’ve just seen unified junior middleweight champion Julian Williams toss his name in the pot. Following up were champions Dmitry Bivol and Errol Spence Jr. There is no shortage of names that would take a call to fight the young unified champion at the drop of hat!

The World Awaits!

The boxing community is waiting to see what will the next move be. As we know, the IBF has ordered a purse bid to face mandatory challenger Sergiy Derevyanchenko.

Even if they forgo the IBF, there is still the possibility of a third Golovkin fight that remains to be the most profitable fight in the division.

While we await the decision, as the next few weeks pass away, it’s certain the news will be abuzz with all things concerning Golden Boy and Team Alvarez, as it normally does.
