Canelo Alvarez Tells Ryan Garcia to Mind his Own Career!
In boxing, it does not take long for fighters to go from being the best of friends to mortal enemies. That switch can get flipped quickly, as harsh criticism is often to blame for things going sour. Here, the relationship between undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (57-2-2, 39KO) and lightweight contender Ryan “King Ry” Garcia (22-0, 18KO) continues to implode.
Alvarez had taken the young fighter under his wing and was a mentor to him when they both were under the Golden Boy Promotions banner. Fans inside the boxing community viewed Garcia as the heir to the Canelo throne as the next big star in boxing. Even when Alvarez split from Golden Boy, the relationship between these two fighters stayed the same. It was big brother Canelo watching over the career of little brother Garcia.
WHERE IT STARTED TO GO WRONG
Things changed as a list of issues that kept popping up for the young lightweight. Following Garcia’s impressive defeat over Luke Campbell at the beginning of 2021, he spent the rest of the year pulling out of fights to go through depression. Yet, during this time frame, Alvarez called into question his protégé’s dedication to the sport.
Many inside the boxing community believe this was the beginning of their friendship evaporating faster than the pocket money of a drunk gambler in Las Vegas. Garcia eventually switched trainers shortly afterward, leaving Eddy Reynoso for Joe Goosen.
CANELO CLAPS BACK HARD
Garcia has openly admitted to hoping they could patch up their friendship. That may be wishful thinking now after his recent comments have burned that bridge down. Alvarez picked three-divisional champion Gervonta Davis as his favorite fighter to watch. Garcia, during an interview on the DAZN boxing show, picked against Canelo in the upcoming trilogy with two-time unified champion Gennady Golovkin.
Alvarez, on the same show, was made aware of Garcia’s pick and he went ballistic.
“He’s just mad for something, he’s no longer in the team. He’s always going to be versus us no matter what. But he’s a little kid […] my advice for him is to do your job, focus on your career, win a world championship first. Then start talking about other people because you’ve accomplished nothing.”
The undisputed super middleweight champion was far from done.
“You can call out everybody and say and talk and everything, but at the end of the day you are doing nothing.
We need to understand him now that he’s no longer with the Canelo team. He’s going to talk mad shit about us […] it’s not fair that he’s talking shit about everything in the camp. He came to my gym, and we showed him love and support. He then goes and says anything. When a person is ungrateful, it’s the worst thing.”
