Teofimo Lopez Planning Return to Form Against Pedro Campa
It’s been a rocky road for former unified 135-pound champion Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez Jr. (16-1, 12KOs). After defeating three-division world champion Vasyl Lomachenko (16-2, 11KOs) to become lightweight unified champion, he was hailed as the division’s new face. However, that reign would end in his first title defense as he was on the receiving end of a major upset, losing to George Kambosos (20-1, 10KOs) last November.
The loss would send Lopez Jr. down a shaky path, as he revealed he contemplated suicide. The confidence and borderline cockiness the public was so used to had suddenly faded. Refusing to accept his defeat, he and his father continued to cry robbery and insinuate that politics had something to do with his loss to Ferocious.
Now he’s seemingly put that all behind him as he embarks on a new journey in his career. On August 13, he will return to the ring against Pedro Campa (34-1-1, 23KOs). This will mark his first fight since the loss to Kambosos as well as his debut at junior welterweight.
COMING BACK STRONG!
With everything now set, The Takeover has officially started training camp. To generate excitement around his return to the ring, his father, Teofimo Lopez Sr, released a video on social media showing his son displaying his punching power as he appeared to bust open a punching bag. Feeling good about what he saw from his son, the elder Lopez would sound the trumpets!
“That’s what I’m talking about! We coming! “We coming strong!”
It’s clear that the father and trainer of the former champ is excited to be back. It’ll be interesting to see how Lopez Jr. looks come fight night.
