The WBA has clarified an error on their website and claims Canelo Alvarez is still the WBA Regular champion

WBA “regular” super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez will retain the title for now. Reports went rampant recently after the champion was not listed under Callum Smith on the WBA website.

Despite what was reported earlier, he will remain as the champion. This is similar to the situation with Floyd Mayweather who held the WBA welterweight and super welterweight titles concurrently.

As for now Alvarez has no mandatory obligations for either of his titles, although, a potential bout between David Lemieux and John Ryder will determine a mandatory for this title. He is scheduled to fight Daniel Jacobs for the IBF middleweight title on May 4 which will be the third of four chips of the middleweight undisputed crown.

Although he hasn’t officially vacated the title, it is expected he will concentrate on becoming undisputed at middleweight.
