Do not sleep on Brian Castaño heading into fight with Jermell Charlo!
On July 17, the boxing world will see its first undisputed junior middleweight champion crowned in over a decade. The most recent was Hall of Famer Winky Wright who easily defeated future Hall Of Famer Shane Mosley in March of 2004. The two men who’ll be vying for junior middleweight supremacy are unified champion Jermell “Iron Man” Charlo (34-1, 18KOs) and WBO champion Brian “El Boxi” Castaño (17-0-1, 12KOs).

Heading into this matchup, the Houston, Texas native is a considerable favorite, and rightfully so. He’s a boxer-puncher with a versatile skill set and a wealth of experience. That being said, Castaño, who hails from Argentina, is not to be overlooked. He’s been in the ring with former long-reigning WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara. Against Lara, he had to settle for a draw in a fight most thought he clearly won in March of 2019. In February 2021, he thoroughly and impressively dominated former WBO champion Patrick Teixeira to win the WBO title.
What Castaño may lack in technical and fundamental skills, he makes up for with his non-stop pressure and impressive offensive arsenal. He’s a two-handed fighter with good power. El Boxi digs to the body with bad intentions, throws uppercuts, and right and left hooks. Just ask Lara and Teixeira.
Charlo, who alluded to the difficulty of this bout, knows that he’ll have to be clicking on all cylinders. Once the bell rings Castaño will be right in his chest trying to make this an all-out war!
