Charles Conwell Guarantees a Bout with Vergil Ortiz Jr.!
When next answering the call of duty, on August 10, super welterweight contender Charles “Bad News” Conwell (19-0, 14 KO’s) will face Khiary Gray (18-6, 13 KO’s). Yet, while not overlooking Gray, it would be foolish to believe that Conwell does not have bigger fish to fry in mind. One such opponent is fellow Golden Boy Promotions stablemate Vergil Ortiz Jr (21-0, 21 KO’s).
Even better for him, Conwell will perform on the undercard when Ortiz Jr. goes head to head with Serhii Bohachuk in the main event. In a perfect world, each will operate in such a fashion to only further whet the public appetite to see this clash. If listening to Bad News, during a recent interview with Fight Hype, this match is certainly written in the stars.
“For sure, that fight is definitely going to happen! Like you said, same promotional team, same company, same network, it’s bound to happen! I’m excited! These are the types of fights that make me excited and want to train harder everyday.”
PAYING DUES
In many respects, Conwell has been flying under the radar of the casual fan, but he has quietly made a name for himself among hardcore fans. The Cleveland native has worked his way up to the impressive standings of #3 (WBC) and #10 (WBO) with a 75% knockout ratio. Lately however, one thing that has hurt his public growth is inactivity. Gray will stand as his second match this year, with Nathaniel Gallimore being the first.
Prior to Gallimore though, Conwell had been out of action for more than a year and half. This is precisely why he was happy to sign with the very visible Golden Boy Promotions earlier this year. In an ideal world, not only will the promotional outfit be able to keep him busy, they will be able to secure him the bigger fights. Bigger bouts such as a showdown with Vergil Ortiz Jr. In the end, only time will tell.
In the meantime, before he can ascend any higher up the rankings, or public recognition, Bad News will first have to take care of business on August 10 when he dances with Khiary Gray. If all goes well, which is likely to happen, then we will see what big events Golden Boy Promotions can drum up for the heavy-fisted Charles Conwell!
