Charles Conwell is broken up over what has happened to Patrick Day!
Undefeated junior middleweight contender Charles Conwell (11-0, 9KO) did what any boxer tries to do whenever they step into a ring; WIN!
A great trainer will always tell an aspiring fighter how brutal the sport can be. He/she will also explain at lengths that not only can the sport be fatal for the opponent but for their fighter as well!
Conwell would have no idea going into his Ocotber 12 bout that his desire to win would put another contender in Patrick Day in a state where he is fighting for his life.
After a left-hook would knock Day down in the final round of their bout, the 27 year-old was taken out of the ring on a gurney. While being rushed to the hospital, he started to seize and dropped into a coma. As of the publishing of this article, Day is still in critical condition and is utilizing a breathing tube.
While in wait to hear updated news on his former opponent, Conwell sends a heartfelt message to Day over social media.
On July 23, 28 year-old junior welterweight contender Maxim Dadashev passed away after losing to Sabriel Matias in a July 20 bout. 23 year-old Hugo Alfredo Santillan passed away in a bout that took place in Argentina the same weekend.
Other instances of fighters obtaining similar injuries but surviving include Adonis Stevenson and Pritchard Colon. Former undisputed welterweight champion Zab Judah was also rushed to the hospital after losing by knockout to Cletus Seldin in June.
This is clearly something that is starting to happen more often than in the past. Sure many fighters from the past suffered life-long after effects from head trauma like Muhammad Ali, Gerald McClellan and Meldrick Taylor. However, it seems the probability of this happening has increased in modern boxing.
Prayers from the staff of 3kingsboxing.com go out to him and his family and we hope the young man can make a full recovery! We would also like to let Conwell know to keep his head up in this trying time!
