Charles Conwell Should Be Next For Fundora
Handlers of unified junior middleweight champion Sebastian “The Towering Inferno” Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KOs) are scrambling for an opponent for the fighter’s anticipated return to the ring. Of all the available contenders, Charles Conwell (21-0, 16 KOs) deserves the fight more than any other.
GIVE HIM HIS OPPORTUNITY
It had been long thought in boxing circles that Fundora would defend the titles against one-time unified 147-pound champion Errol Spence in March 2025. That proposed matchup is now off. Conwell was impressive in 2024 and is coming off a seventh-round stoppage over Gerardo Luis Vergara in December of that year. On social media, Conwell said that he was ready to step in for Spence.
Fundora has been inactive since becoming the unified champion with a split-decision victory over Tim Tszyu in March 2024. There’s now a battle for the opportunity to get a crack at The Towering Inferno. World-ranked contender Serhii Bohachuk (25-2, 24 KOs) is also in the mix. 3KingsBoxing has learned that his team is trying to position the WBA second-ranked contender into the now-vacant slot.
The key factor in favor of Conwell could be the WBO. Conwell is currently ranked second by that sanctioning body while Bohachuk is ranked eighth. To be fair, Bohachuk is ranked second and Conwell third, by the WBC. However, Conwell was ranked first by that sanctioning body but mysteriously fell in the rankings, most likely due to senseless boxing politics.
Some in the boxing community would retort and ask, “what about Xander Zayas?” He is ranked first by the WBO. There’s been no indication from Zayas or his handlers that they want to fight Fundora in the immediacy.
Conwell is loud and adamant about fighting Fundora. When you put all those factors in, he should get first dibs at the unified champion.
