Jermall Charlo’s Showtime Homecoming
To heighten interest in Jermall “Iron Man” Charlo’s (31-1, 15 KO’s) June 23 dustup, SHOWTIME Boxing has premiered ‘Homecoming: Jermall Charlo’ via YouTube. On June 23 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, he will face challenger Jorge “Demonio” Cota (28-3, 25 KO’s).
Cota is a late replacement for Tony Harrison. Harrison notably upset Charlo on December 22, 2018 and took his WBC super welterweight title. Somehow, during his training camp for the eagerly awaited do-over, Harrison injured himself and had to withdraw from the rematch.
To be such a short piece, the Homecoming segment was interesting and informative. It appropriately opened with Charlo standing in his new home, which was undergoing renovations.
It was appropriate because the treatment was mostly dedicated to what type of man he was away from boxing.
Of course, there was footage of Iron Man in the ring throwing blows, yet the meat and potatoes revolved around Charlo’s family.
The cameras were able to catch up with the heavy-handed boxer’s mother, current and first coach, along with his wife and children. Normally, the Charlo twins can be rather impassioned individuals when dealing with the press and media obligations.
Therefore, it was a notable change of pace to see Iron Man interact with wife, Shantel and their four sons.
It was also interesting to discover that the couple were high school sweethearts and have been a consistent item since he was 16 and she 15.
When interacting with his personal tribe, Jermall was all smiles and jokes, which is a long way off from his usual scowl.
Reflection
On the one hand, ironically, the Homecoming segment did very little to pump up the upcoming prizefight. However, on the other hand, the program did a fantastic job of presenting Charlo as a down to Earth, loving and approachable person.
For fans of Jermall Charlo, or those who simply want to learn more about him, the quick Homecoming segment will make a great watch.
