Julio Cesar Chavez Jr to face Anderson Silva!
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (52-5-1, 34KOs) will return to the ring against a legendary name in another combat sport, Anderson Silva (34-11)! They will meet in the ring on June 19. The fight will take place on the undercard of Julio Cesar Chavez Sr’s final bout, being billed as the “Tribute to the Kings”. Chavez Sr will take on Hector Camacho Jr in the main event.
HISTORY BEHIND CHAVEZ JR V SILVA
Chavez Jr has been a major disappointment in his career. He is a one-time champion, having won the WBC Middleweight title back in June of 2011 against Sebastian Zbik. He would make three title defenses before losing to Sergio Martinez in September of 2015. Most recently, he picked up a fourth round TKO victory over Jeyson Minda back in November 2020. Prior to that he lost two consecutive bouts to Mario Abel Cazares and former WBA Regular Middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs.
Anderson Silva, a mixed martial arts legend, reigned as UFC Middleweight champion from 2006-2013. In that run, he would make ten title defenses. Silva, while vastly inexperienced in the squared circle, he has a 1-1 boxing record. Back in 1998, he would be knocked out in his boxing debut against Osmar Luiz Teixeira in the second round. Following a long hiatus from the sport, he would return to stop Julio Cesar De Jesus in two rounds in 2005.
Silva has always had that interest in returning to boxing, often being linked to all-time great Roy Jones Jr. The two entered negotiations, but never reached a deal. Now with him possibly squaring off against Chavez Jr, one has to ask what a 45-year-old Anderson Silva has left in the tank. If a deal indeed gets done, we will find out on June 19.
As for Chavez Jr, if he loses this fight, this would be the ultimate embarrassment. Silva is ten years his elder and not a proficiently trained boxer.
