Mikey Garcia Returns to the Win Column

Mikey Garcia is finally in the winning circle when it comes to being a welterweight! In his second fight in the division, the former four-division champion overcame a less than stellar start to get his 40th career win.

Faced with a height disadvantage, Garcia came out slow against former WBO champion Jessie Vargas would do well early on as he utilized a quick sharp jab to keep Garcia at bay. As the other rounds would come and go, we would see Vargas start to land some hard shot. In particular, the left hook upstairs and combinations to the body would be Vargas win some of the early portion rounds.


Sensing a need to do something dramatic, Garcia would score a knockdown on a beautiful right-hand!

As the second half of the fight started, it would be Garcia who finally had Vargas down. He would just pick apart and outfight his fellow Mexican fighter. Vargas, who’s tough as nails, simply couldn’t muster enough power in his punches to effectively hurt his smaller adversary. Although he landed some hard shots in round 11!

At the end Garcia would be declared the winner by way of a unanimous decision.The scores read 116-111 twice, and 114-113.

With this win Garcia, now is seemingly back on the path he wants to become a fifth division world champion. It’ll be interesting to see if he drops down to 140 or remains at 147.
