Chris Eubank Jr. and Billy Joe Saunders burn up social media
WBO super middleweight champion “Superb” Billy Joe Saunders (29-0, 14ko) and fellow British boxer Chris Eubank Jr (29-2, 22ko) are getting personal with the jabs on social media.
THE COVID-19 DISRUPTION
The WBO champion was all set to face boxing’s biggest earner Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (53-1-2, 36ko) for the traditional Cinco de Mayo weekend bout. Then, of course, like everything else in sports across the globe, COVID-19 put an immediate halt to all of that.
With boxing resuming without fans, purses will have to be adjusted. Also, certain protocols are making it impossible for some fighters to properly prepare for big fights.
Understanding this reality, “Superb” sent back his lottery ticket sweepstakes, turning down the rescheduled September bout. This sent Golden Boy Promotions back to the drawing board to find a creditable opponent for the Mexican superstar.
THE PAST COLLIDING WITH THE PRESENT
Now, this is where the fun begins.
Keep in mind, these two men have a history. It was Saunders that gave Eubank Jr his first defeat back in 2014 when both were undefeated, fighting for the Commonwealth/BBBofC British Middleweight crown.
Eubank Jr. decided that since the WBO champion returned his ticket, he would be more than a willing participant for a chance at the Mexican superstar, while taking a jab at his fellow countryman.
Okay, if you know the WBO champion, then a clap was back was imminent.
Then, of course, it just got deeply personal.
Saunders would reply in turn, saying “The only drugs I use is Viagra for when I dismantle your mum’s Fanny”.
It’s unlikely that Eubank Jr will get the Alvarez sweepstakes phone call, but the UK fans would be very interested in a rematch between these two popular British fighters. It looks like they have reignited their rivalry, or maybe it never truly burned out.
