Claressa Shields Stops Vanessa Joanisse in 2 Rounds!
In her first fight in the division, Claressa “T-Rex” Shields (15-0, 3 KO’s) quickly stopped heavyweight champion Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse (7-2, 2 KO’s) in two. With the win, Shields took control of Joanisse’s WBC title along with the vacant WBO light heavyweight title that was also up for grabs. T-Rex is now a five-division champion.
From the clang of the opening bell, Shields dictated the pace and geography of the ring with her feet and jab. In the last moments of the first round however, T-Rex blasted the champion with a stiff, high proof left hook that buzzed her. Smelling blood, Shields jumped back on Joanisse from the start of the second round.
T-Rex flattened the champ to her back on two separate occasions with sturdy right hooks. Referee Ben Rodriguez called a halt to the action when Joanisse went down a third time, yet this was more of a push than a punch. Regardless, Shields steamrolled her way to a well-earned second round stoppage win.
