Michel Rivera Wins Split Decision Over Hugo Alberto Roldan
In his latest tour of duty, super lightweight boxer Michel “La Zarza Ali” Rivera (26-1, 14 KO’s) scored a split decision win over Hugo “Nato” Roldan (22-3-1, 7 KO’s). Roldan launched off his stool and took the fight straight to Rivera in the opening round. His aggressive tactics served him well for that period. By the second round however, La Zarza Ali established the more favorable range and pace that he wanted to compete at.
From that early stage in their duel, Rivera assumed the role of ring general and never relinquished it. Roldan never quit trying to win though, yet he appeared to mainly attack with more ferocity rather than alter his tactics in any serious way. For his part, keeping the jab in Nato’s face, counterpunching and using his feet responsibly was all that Rivera needed to do.
After going the full ten rounds, the match went to the scorecards. Yet, La Zarza Ali did drop Nato hard in the final minute of the tenth with a short counter righthand. To his credit, Roldan found his feet but the final score would see Rivera prevail by split decision to the tune of 95-94 (Roldan) and 98-91, 99-90 (Rivera).
