Chris Colbert: “I’m Ready to go to Work!”
WHEN: January 18, 2020
NETWORK: Fox Sports 1
TIME: 6:30 PM ET
When it comes to undefeated super featherweight Chris “Prime Time” Colbert (13-0, 5 KO’s), there is no question that he is overflowing with confidence.
The amiable boxer will face the Panamanian pugilist and former WBA “super” champion Jezreel “El Invisible” Corrales (23-3, 9 KO’s) on the under-card of Julian Williams v Jeison Rosario at the Liacouras Center located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Hanging in the balance of the fight, to be aired on FOX, will be the interim WBA super featherweight title.
DON’T KNOW WHO HE IS! DON’T CARE
Like many fighters, in preparation for his upcoming slugfest, Colbert did not bother himself with watching any footage to familiarize himself with Corrales. Prime Time left all the research and strategy forging up to his trainer.
Instead of studying his opponent, Colbert poured all his attention into getting his mind and body sharp and ready for combat, as he expressed in an exclusive interview with FightHype.
When directly asked what he knew about Corrales, Prime Time quickly retorted that he didn’t know a thing about El Invisible. To be competing in an interim title fight, it is somewhat odd that Corrales is coming into the fight directly off a loss to Ladarius “Memphis” Miller (20-1, 6 KO’s).
Although Corrales did make a huge splash on the boxing scene when he dethroned former WBA “super” champion and arguably pound-for-pound fighter Takashi Uchiyama in back-to-back bouts in 2016, he has been somewhat inactive and his performances since then have been subpar.
For example, Corrales is 1-2 in his last three bouts, with the first of those defeats coming by way of stoppage. El Invisible took all of 2018 off and only staged two bouts in 2019.
From the outside looking in, this does not appear to be an ideal situation to be about to face one of the swiftly rising talents in the sport.
“[when asked what he knows about Corrales] Absolutely nothing! I just know that he has two arms, two legs and a head to hit and he is in my way chasing for a world title!
“I mean we got twelve rounds, so it should only take me one or two to adapt and then go to work.”
REBEL WITH A CAUSE
Even though Colbert is not yet a world champion, and is still building his overall profile in the sport, he is very conscious of the large stages that he has competed on.
This is why he has already started to use these platforms to spread awareness about a number of serious causes in the world. For those that have seen him fight before, it’s acutely difficult not to notice his often times loud and flamboyant hair.
While many might assume that the bold and brazen boxer is doing this as some extension of his outgoing personality, he assures that that is certainly not the case.
“Yea, but I don’t do it for style, I do it for causes and this cause is for epilepsy. One of my nephews has epilepsy, so I support the awareness.
“Every fight I do a different cause. I did green for cerebral palsy, red for sickle cell, pink for breast cancer, gold for childhood cancer.
“I like to put the awareness on blast so that people can know. There are still people out there fighting for their life with certain things and I’m with them.”
