Richard Commey Stops Isa Chaniev in two rounds
The vacant IBF Lightweight title match between always-dangerous Richard Commey (27-2, 24KO) and Isa Chaniev (13-1, 6KO) has a lot on the line besides the title.
This was Commey’s second opportunity at becoming a champion. Having fallen short against Robert Easter Jr. back in 2016, it has been three years. This was now-or-never.
Chaniev, a Russian fighter, was unknown to the boxing community. A victory would be a huge boost for his career.
At the opening bell, it was clear Commey wasn’t going to let this go to the judges. He came out of the corner going to the body, landing big punches and hurting the opponent early. It would result in an early knockdown in the first, followed by two more knockdowns in the second round that would result in the fight being stopped.
The newly crowned champion would dance in the corner to the roar of the crowd. It was a gratifying moment, finally capturing a world title. This now sets up a unification fight with pound-for-pound fighter Vasyl Lomachenko in April of this year.
This impressive win, no doubt, will be extra motivation for Commey going into the next biggest fight of his life.
