Michael Conlan Not Overlooking the Power Leigh Woods Possesses!

On March 12, unbeaten featherweight contender Michael “Mick” Conlan (16-0, 8KOs) will take on WBA regular featherweight champion Leigh “Leigh-thal” Woods (25-2, 15KOs). The 2012 Olympic bronze medalist will not only be the road fighter in this fight, he’ll also be contending with the power of Woods. Conlan, who has a wealth of experience stemming from his extensive amateur career, knows the danger of facing Woods. While he is well aware of the power of the WBA regular champion, he’s not going into this bout fearful of being on the receiving end of that power.

Speaking to iFL TV, he divulged his thoughts on Woods’ power, which has been a major talking point ahead of this fight.

“Am I weary in the sense that am I scared of it? No. Worried in a sense that I know he punches hard? Yes. And less then one punch can change any fight and we all know that. I have to be weary of it. I’d be foolish if I wasn’t. So yeah I’m worried enough that […] I know what I have to do to kind of take it away from him, so to say.”

It’s clear from the comments of Conlan, he’ll be well prepared to try and neutralize the power of Woods. Moreover, being that he’s the boxer in this matchup, he’s likely going to try and make this a boxing match and not a brawl.

Woods is coming off a twelve round TKO victory over Can Xu to win the WBA regular featherweight title. The late stoppage indicates his ability to carry his power throughout the course of a fight. This is something Conlan will have to be concerned with until the final bell.
