Knockout CP Freshmart Returns to the Ring With a Dominant Win over Outclassed Siridech Deebook

Knockout CP Freshmart (real name, Thammanoon Niyomtrong) has one the catchiest ring names in the sport. He is also the longest active reigning world champion at 105 pounds and arguably the best fighter in the division. Despite his ring moniker, CP Freshmart is not known as a puncher. Instead, the WBA “super” world minimumweight champion is a tough, all-around fighter who can adjust and do whatever is necessary to win.

On October 5, the 31-year-old from Surin, Thailand made the ninth defense against countryman and WBA #6 minimumweight Siridech Deebook at the Chang Arena in Buriram, Thailand. CP Freshmart – Deebook was scheduled for May 29 but was moved back due to the COVID-19 state of emergency in Thailand.

MAKING EASY WORK OF IT

The defending champion was a sizable favorite, and he displayed his superiority from the opening bell. The jab and counter right-hands were landing early and often. He faced a bit of discomfort midway through round two after suffering a cut over his right eye.

However, moments later, CP Freshmart (22-0, 8 KOs) put Deebook (23-7-1, 13 KOs) on the seat of his pants with a beautiful lead right-left hook combination to the point of the chin. At this point, one could tell the demise of the challenger was imminent.

His dominance continued as he dropped his opponent with a stiff left jab just seconds into round three. That was followed by a left hook-right-hand combination to the head that put Deebook down for the third time. Referee Pinit Prayadsab stepped in and waved the fight over forty-nine seconds into round three.

This was CP Freshmart’s first stoppage win since a fifth-round KO over Go Odaira in March of 2017. As impressive as the champ looked in defeating Deebook, this was someone not considered a world-class opponent. Having not fought since March 2020, one would expect that CP Freshmart would not face a difficult opponent after such a long layoff.

WBA “regular” world minimumweight champion Vic Saludar will face mandatory challenger Erick Rojas on December 9. There’s a good probability that CP Freshmart will fight the winner of that bout at some point in 2022.
