Terence Crawford Smacks Down Critiques From Teofimo Lopez
Two-time undisputed world champion Terence “Bud” Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs), is a fierce defender of his fistic resume. Whenever feeling disrespected, it’s a virtual guarantee that the Omaha, Nebraska native will swiftly respond. It’s evident by the ongoing back-and-forth between Crawford and current WBO junior welterweight champion Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez (19-1, 13 KOs).
NOT GOING TO TOLERATE THE DISRESPECT
The roots of their beef go back to recent comments from Lopez questioning Crawford’s accomplishments as a welterweight. After hearing what was said by The Takeover, Crawford unleashed a series of responses to Lopez on social media.
Crawford argues it’s nothing to question about what he’s done at 147. He’s fought whoever they put in front of him. Ultimately, he accomplished his goal of becoming the undisputed champion in the division. However, some in the boxing community argue it was fair for Lopez to note that Crawford’s welterweight title defenses, Jose Benavidez and Kell Brook, were against fighters with previous physical impediments.
Crawford’s most recent fight was a ninth-round stoppage over Errol Spence to become the undisputed champion in July 2023. Since that outing, Spence acknowledged that a lack of discipline and a lingering eye injury that required cataract surgery contributed to his loss.
REVISIONIST HISTORY?
But here’s the flaw in Lopez’s argument; If the junior welterweight champion wants to make an argument about wins against a fighter who was physically damaged, he needs to look in the mirror.
The two biggest wins of Lopez’s career came against Vasyl Lomachenko in December 2019 and against Josh Taylor in June 2023. Lomachenko fought Lopez with a bum shoulder, which required surgery afterward. Taylor entered the fight against Lopez after a lengthy layoff due to a surgical procedure to repair a torn plantar fascia. As a result of this reality, some accuse Lopez of being a hypocrite.
The arguing between Crawford and Lopez will not end anytime soon. It has created quite a stir in the boxing community.
