Franchon Crews-Dezurn On a Collision Course with Christina Hammer?

Matches can often germinate from fighters engaging in trash-talk either during interviews, on social media, or just a coincidental meeting. That could potentially be the case for undisputed super middleweight champ Franchon Crews-Dezurn (8-1, 2 KOs) and two-division champ Christina Hammer (28-1, 13 KOs).

ISSUING A CHALLENGE

Both were in attendance in London, England for Claressa Shields’s unanimous decision win over Savannah Marshall to become the two-time undisputed middleweight champion. During a chance meeting between Hammer and Crews-Dezurn, Hammer called for a fight.

“You can be the next; you can be the next”

Crews-Dezurn is never one to back down from a challenge. In response to being called out, the champ said she would be more than willing to make the fight happen in 2023. After, the current queen of 168 posted the following on social media.

In her last outing, Crews-Dezurn defeated then unified WBA/IBF titleholder Elin Cederroos by unanimous decision in April 2022 to become the undisputed champ. Hammer has won world titles at 160 and 168. The sole defeat of her career came in April 2019 to Shields in a battle for the undisputed middleweight championship. But Hammer has moved up to super middleweight and has not lost since. Her most recent bout was an eight-round unanimous decision win over Luiza Davydova in May 2022.

CREWS-DEZURN VS HAMMER MAKES PLENTY OF SENSE

Hammer is ranked first by the WBA and IBF, and second by the WBC at 168. Look for at least one of those sanctioning bodies to order that Cruz-Dezurn’s next title defense must be against Hammer.

Additionally, both are more of the known quantities for followers of women’s boxing. The undisputed champ is one of the more popular fighters on the Matchroom promotional roster since signing with the company in January 2022. Many fans still remember Hammer from her fight with Shields. On paper, a matchup would pit the jab and boxing skills versus aggression, physical strength, and determination.

It would behoove Matchroom to make this fight. A contest between the two in the United States on DAZN would draw decent numbers. Crews-Dezurn is looking for a fight and has been inactive since her win over Cederroos. It would seem that Hammer would be a great foil. In the aftermath of their recent face-to-face confrontation, this is a potential match worth keeping an eye on.
