Isaac Cruz Says Golden Boy Never Sent An Offer For Ryan Garcia Fight
In 2021, Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz (22-2-1, 15KOs) announced himself to the boxing community after giving WBA Regular lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis a run for the money. Afterward, Cruz was targeted by former WBC Interim champion Ryan “King Ry” Garcia (21-0, 18KOs), but was it all talk? Why didn’t the fight happen?
Pitbull had the entire boxing world buzzing after his performance against Davis. His relentless pressure turned the usually aggressive Davis into a boxer, moving around the ring more than fans have ever seen.
The Mexican fighter was a late replacement after Rolando Romero was pulled off the card over sexual misconduct allegations. Moreover, his aggressive style was liked by the judges as they scored it fairly close.
Cruz’s popularity skyrocketed as everyone looking to make their bones at lightweight started calling out Pitbull. Garcia, who was looking to return the ring, targeted Cruz as an opponent.
GOLDEN BOY WAS NOT SERIOUS ABOUT MAKING THE FIGHT
For some unknown reason, Garcia and Golden Boy CEO Oscar de la Hoya came out on social media claiming that Cruz had turned down the fight. This prompted Sean Gibbons, a representative of Cruz, to chime in as well. Later it seemed as if both sides would sit down and make the fight happen.
Well not so fast! Cruz is now going to fight former unified champion featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa on the undercard of Errol Spence Jr versus Yordenis Ugas. While speaking to the press, the tough Mexican fighter was asked why the fight with Garcia never materialized, and his reply raised some eyebrows.
“There was never a real offer, there wasn’t a real negotiation. Oscar de la Hoya, what he did was he tried to negotiate via social media, which I personally thought was unprofessional. When Sean Gibbons replied via Twitter, then nothing really came of it anyway. So that’s when we pivoted, and we went towards Gamboa. The Garcia fight was never anywhere close to becoming a reality.”
