Smith Is Eager To Face Puello For The Title
Junior welterweight contender Dalton “Thunder” Smith (18-0, 13KO) is ready to challenge WBC champion Alberto “La Avispa” Puello (24-0, 10KO) next.
On April 19, Thunder dismantled an overmatched Mathieu Germain by unanimous decision. Smith landed hard shots throughout the contest, that kept the Canadian in survival mode the entire time. He landed uppercuts, hooks, hard body shots, and scored three knockdowns. Despite getting deducted one point in the later rounds, Dalton looked impressive as a shot at the title was on the line.
During the post-fight interview, Dalton issued a message to La Avispa.
“I’m not going to start talking shit to a fighter that hasn’t disrespected me. But, Alberto Puello, I respect you. You’re a great champion. But I believe I’m the man to beat you. So let’s get it on.”
Puello is coming off a close split-decision victory over Sandor Martin, which some believe he should have lost. Nonetheless, he has a style that is very capable of defeating Smith. The Dominican champion has solid movement and is a good counter-puncher.
The WBC champion can’t get into a shootout against the hard-hitting Smith, who has improved as a boxer as well. Hopefully, the two teams can hash out a deal to fight later this year.
