Gervonta Davis and Rolando Romero to Settle Up on May 28
The on-again/off-again grudge match between WBA Regular lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (26-0, 24 KOs) and WBA number one ranked junior lightweight Rolando “Rolly” Romero (14-0, 12 KOs) appears to be back on again. According to ESPN, the two agreed to a deal to battle on May 28 on Showtime PPV.
They were originally set to fight on December 5, 2021. However, Romero was pulled out after sexual assault allegations surfaced. Following an investigation, Henderson County Nevada officials decided no charges would be filed.
As a result, this will be the challenger’s first fight since his seventh-round TKO win over former junior welterweight world title challenger Anthony Yigit. In Davis’ last outing, he was taken the distance by Isaac Cruz on December 5. Cruz was a late replacement for Romero.
FAR FROM FRIENDS
It is known among boxing circles that the champ and challenger do not like each other. Throughout 2021, they regularly went back and forth during some highly contentious exchanges on social media. Rolly has openly mocked Davis, predicting he will knock his rival out. The champ believes that the trash-talking challenger is in over his head and not on his level.
An argument can be made that Davis is the biggest hitter at 135 pounds. The resident of Baltimore, Maryland can take you out with either hand. He is one of the few fighters with the ability to take you out with any given punch at any given time.
Romero is no slouch in the power department. Big for a lightweight, the resident of Las Vegas has also displayed two-fisted power. Trash-talking aside, this has the makings of being an explosive contest. Because there has been no location set as of this writing, stay tuned to 3Kings Boxing for further details.
