Lou DiBella Says George Kambosos Jr Wanted The Haney Fight

The fight for undisputed between unified lightweight champion George “Ferocious” Kambosos Jr (20-0, 10KOs) and WBC champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (27-0, 15KOs) is already starting with fireworks. During the press conference to promote the fight, Haney claimed that the unified champion was forced to take the fight. Promoter Lou DiBella of DiBella Entertainment paints a different picture.

HOW IT ALL STARTED

Haney immediately targeted Kambosos Jr after the Aussie knocked Teofimo Lopez off his high horse. Fans were excited to see the two champions standing side by side, with Kambosos agreeing to fight for true undisputed with Haney. As time passed, negotiations between promoters Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing and Lou DiBella of DiBella entertainment to make the fight did not pan out.

Team Kambosos shifted gears and knocked on the door of Top Rank looking to fight former unified champion Vasyl “Hi-Tech” Lomachenko (16-2, 11KOs). However, as fate would have it, Lomachenko joined the military to defend his homeland of Ukraine from Russian invading forces and refused the opportunity to leave his post train for Kambosos. The unified champion then shifted into reverse and went back to the table for undisputed with Haney.

DIBELLA TELLS A DIFFERENT STORY

During the press conference in Australia, Haney took exception to Kambosos’ claims that he was chosen. The Dream made it clear that the Australian was forced into taking the fight.

In an interview with Fight Hype, DiBella explained that his fighter did indeed want the fight.

“The first effort I made was to try and make the Haney fight because that’s what George wanted, and we just couldn’t reach an agreement. Then I was able to offer a better deal to George to fight Loma […] Loma fell out. Why do you think Haney is happening? If George didn’t want it, it wouldn’t be happening.”

DiBella got very animated with the idea that his fighter Kambosos was going to Duck Haney by fighting Lomachenko.

“Anyone who thinks fighting Loma is a day at the beach or a duck, you don’t fucking duck fighting Lomachenko! Stop, stop! The motherfucker’s a beast!”
