Anthony Dirrell set to make his first title defense against former champion now mandatory David Benavidez!
WBC super middleweight Champion Anthony Dirrell is expected to defend his title against former WBC champion David Benavidez on the Deontay Wilder vs Luis Ortiz 2 under-card in September.
Benavidez initially held the title when he defeated Ronald Gavril by split-decision in September 2017. Weeks after defeating him again for his first title defense in February 2018, the former champion would be declared “Champion in Recess” due to testing positive for cocaine.
He has since returned on the under-card of Errol Spence vs Mikey Garcia on March 16 to stop Floyd Mayweather protege J’Leon Love in two rounds.
Dirrell would go on to win the vacant title in a match-up against former WBSS participant Anvi Yildirim a year later.
Benavidez, brother of welterweight contender Jose Benavidez, is only 22 years-old and one of the rising stars in boxing. Dirrell, the brother of former Super Six participant Andre Dirrell, is looking for his biggest win to date after a couple of sub-par performances.
This will be a big fight for both men in determining where their careers will go from here. With the winner to face Anvi Yildirim next, this fight can make or break both yhe future of both fighters depending on how they lose.
