Anthony Dirrell Proves a Man of his Word and Congratulates Caleb Plant
Well it would appear that super middleweight boxer Anthony “The Dog” Dirrell (34-3-2, 25 KO’s) has lived up to his code as a fighter. This came in the seemingly simple form of extending his congratulations to one-time 168-pound champion Caleb “Sweethands” Plant (22-1, 13 KO’s).
During the ninth round of their October 15 prizefight, The Dog was caught with a .38 slug of a left hook. The blow immediately poured his slack, lifeless body down on the canvas dead center in the ring. He did not beat the count.
Losing in and of itself is never fun. However, getting bludgeoned into unconsciousness on national television is a whole other animal. Even worse, Dirrell spent nearly the entirety of the pre fight build-up reinforcing how much he personally did not care for Sweethands. His emphatic undressing can only add more sprinkles of salt to the already well-salted wound. Yet, this is precisely why The Dog still giving him his flowers is a testament to his character.
“I wanted to say congratulations to Caleb – hell of a punch, didn’t see it coming at all but nevertheless, congratulations.”
It will be interesting to see what The Dog does now though. At 38 years old, and 1-1-1 in his last three fights, the options and opportunities to make big moves will only continue to dry up. If Dirrell is going to shake up the division in any significant way, he is going to have to be flawless from here on out.
