Eddie Hearn Officially Claims Anthony Joshua to face Oleksandr Usyk Next!
After weeks of speculation, a deal has been made for the expected battle between unified IBF/WBA ‘super’/WBO Anthony Joshua (24-1, 22 KOs) and WBO mandatory heavyweight challenger Oleksandr Usyk (18-0, 13 KOs). Joshua’s promoter and Matchroom Boxing CEO, Eddie Hearn, made the announcement via social media on June 25.
“Joshua versus Usyk announcement. I don’t want to say two weeks as you guys are bored of me saying that, but soon. September 25 is the date.”
Joshua was initially in negotiations for an August 14 showdown against WBC world heavyweight belt holder Tyson Fury. That was nipped in the bud after arbitrator Daniel Weinstein ruled that Fury’s next fight must be against former WBC champ, Deontay Wilder.
Usyk is a former undisputed world cruiserweight champion who moved up to the heavyweight division in 2019. He’s been adamant about getting his shot at Joshua.
Hearn failed to provide any additional details as far as the venue is concerned. However, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England, is a high probability.
