Hearn Looking to Stage Jessica McCaskill vs Sandy Ryan Rematch
Boxing observers have used the terms “controversy” and “robbery” to describe the disputed draw between unified champion Jessica McCaskill (12-3-1, 5 KOs) and WBO 147-pound champion Sandy Ryan (6-1-1, 2 KOs). Now promoter Eddie Hearn has chimed in and is outraged over the McCaskill vs Ryan verdict.
McCaskill and Ryan went to war in a welterweight unification showdown on September 23 in Orlando, Florida. 3kingsboxing.com covered the contest and felt that Ryan did enough to win.
NOT HAPPY ABOUT THE OUTCOME
The promoter of record for the card in Florida was Eddie Hearn, Chairman of Matchroom Promotions. Speaking to the news outlet iFL TV, Hearn had this to say about the contest:
“I saw what everybody else saw. I saw a Sandy Ryan victory . . . People’s dreams get shattered. For Sandy Ryan, that was a life-changing moment.”
“Jessica McCaskill fought well, fought her heart out. But Sandy Ryan won that fight, and I don’t think it was that close, in all honesty . . . Everyone knows it’s wrong . . . Sandy Ryan deserves to be the unified world champion.”
Ryan would agree with the assessment of Hearn and others upset about the scorecards. The WBO champion is gutted over the decision and called for a rematch on social media.
Her insistence on a rematch certainly seems fair. Hearn said that both fighters are under contract with Matchroom, and he will work towards making it happen at some point in 2024
