Could We See Josh Warrington – Mauricio Lara II This Summer?

Former IBF World Featherweight champion Josh Warrington (30-1, 7 KOs) was expected to make easy work of Mauricio Lara (22-2, 15 KOs) on February 13 at the Wembley Arena. Instead, Lara scored a huge upset as he stopped Warrington in nine rounds. His jaw was fractured, his eardrum was perforated, and he injured his shoulder during the fight. Battered and beaten up, Warrington is now in rebuild mode.

Afterward, he said he would fight a rematch if offered. During a February 17 Q&A on Instagram Live, Warrington’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, gave his insight into that possibility.

“Warrington rematch; all the talk at the moment from Josh is he wants to fight Lara again. Super risky; but summertime, I believe you’ll see Warrington against Lara 2.”

OBSTACLES MUST BE DEALT WITH

It is one thing for Hearn to say that a rematch will take place, but is it a wise move? Warrington was dealt a severe beating and suffered multiple injuries. Then there is the mental barrier the former world featherweight champ must face and deal with. His level of invincibility is permanently gone, and there must be a change in tactics.

Warrington is mainly a pressure fighter. That style cannot work against the physically strong and hard-hitting Lara. In short, it is going to take some time to overcome getting your butt whooped.

You also expect Lara’s confidence level will go to another level. Beating Warrington was almost the equivalent of beating a reigning world champion. It may behoove the former champion to get sufficient rest, then take a tune-up match before deciding to tangle with the hard-hitting 22-year-old from Mexico City.
