Edgar Berlanga Aims to Quiet Canelo vs Benavidez Talks
Top super middleweight contender “The Chosen One” Edgar Berlanga (22-0, 17KO) doesn’t want to hear the names of David “The Monster” Benavidez (29-0, 24KO) or Terence “Bud” Crawford (41-0, 31KO) as he’s heading into his clash with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.
The boxing public wasn’t surprised to hear that unified champion Alvarez was facing The Chosen One instead of The Monster. Boxing fans have been calling for Benavidez, only for Canelo to ignore the demands of the boxing public.
Crawford has been hot on the trail of Canelo and badly wants to fight him. During the intermission of Bud’s battle against Israil Madrimov, Turki Alalshikh called for a fight between Crawford and Alvarez next.
HE DOESN’T CARE TO HEAR THEIR NAMES
During the press conference to kick off Alvarez versus Berlanga on September 14, The New Yorker didn’t hesitate to clarify his feelings about Benavidez and Crawford.
“I don’t want to hear Benavidez, fuck Benavidez. Shoutout to Crawford – they keep mentioning Crawford . . . We have business to handle on September 14. A lot of people keep mentioning Benavidez and all these guys, man. Y’all know it’s not going to happen.”
He is right about one thing – Canelo versus Benavidez or Crawford won’t happen because Alvarez doesn’t want either of those fights. Many within the boxing community are disappointed at how the undisputed champion continues to be dismissive of The Monster.
Fighting Berlanga does have financial benefits as it’s the classic Mexico versus Puerto Rico rivalry. But more importantly, The Chosen One believes he has the tools to conquer the unified champion. In the end, Canelo chose to fight him. Berlanga is hellbent on taking full advantage of the opportunity and shutting up the naysayers in the process.
