Eduardo Hernandez’s Questionable Victory Over Thomas Mattice
With another shot at the title on the table, junior lightweight Eduardo “Rocky” Hernandez (36-2, 32KO) was victorious over Thomas “Gunna Man” Mattice (22-3-1, 17KO) after a cut ended the fight.
Rocky came forward, walking down the Gunna Man with hard body shots. He even found a home for the uppercut after using good footwork to avoid the jab. However, both his eyes were bleeding from a clash of heads.
Mattice came to fight and did a good job countering off the ropes. He used the angles to perfection, then landed hard right hands and uppercuts on the bloody face of the Mexican.
As the fight got interesting, it was stopped after the sixth round due to a cut. Unfortunately for Mattice, the fight went to the judges, who scored it 59-55, 58-55, and 58-56 for Hernandez.
Team Mattice had a good reason to be upset. The replay showed the cut that stopped the fight was from a right uppercut. In this author’s opinion, they need to schedule a rematch. But with a world title possibly next, team Hernandez will move on.
