WBA Title Eliminator Pits Eimantas Stanionis vs Vergil Ortiz Jr
With WBA #1 ranked welterweight Vergil Ortiz Jr (19-0, 19KO) taking out #10 ranked contender Michael McKinson (22-1, 2KO) in the organization’s title eliminator, the “regular” champion Eimantas Stanionis may be Ortiz’ next challenge!
Prior to his win over McKinson, the Texas fighter had to endure questions of doubt from fans and pundits if he is operating at full capacity. Annoyed by this inquiry, Ortiz called it stupid to doubt him and feels he is ready for a title shot now!
ORITZ MAY NOT GET ERROL SPENCE JR NOR TERENCE CRAWFORD NEXT
Typically, with any other sanctioning body this means Ortiz could become the mandatory challenger to face unified champion Errol Spence Jr or WBO champion Terence Crawford provided the fight for undisputed takes place.
On the contrary, the WBA’s super champion does not fight mandatory challengers. That is the responsibility of the “regular” champion. Via belt consolidation is when the organization orders a fight between their two champions. Therefore, Ortiz vs Stanionis may have a better chance of happening than Ortiz vs Spence.
As it pertains to Ortiz vs Crawford, the WBO simply needs to mandate the fight. An order they have been reluctant to make since the opportunity of a Spence vs Crawford undisputed clash is closer to materializing than it has in the past.
Nonetheless, money has a way of making things happen (and not happen). Ortiz mentioned he wants to get back in the ring sooner rather than later. Stay tuned to 3kingsboxing.com to find out what challenge he will be up against next!
