Jaron Ennis could finally get a title shot against Errol Spence Jr

Welterweight contender Jaron “Boots” Ennis (27-0, 25ko) is no longer a prospect. Instead, he is viewed by many inside the boxing community as a threat to anyone holding a title. The highly talented Philadelphia fighter could find himself getting a title shot against unified champion Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr (27-0, 21ko).

Boots has a fight with former title challenger Thomas Dulorme in what many feel is a showcase fight on October 30. However, he could use this fight to make a statement to The Truth that he can longer be overlooked. Ennis has been very vocal about wanting to fight a top-tier fighter to line up a run at the championship in 2022.

“I want a top-three to top-five guy. That way, it would put me in line for a world title by the end of the year or the beginning of 2022.”

THE PATH TO THE TITLE IS WITHIN REACH

Ennis is currently ranked number three by the IBF, which is very important to keep in mind. The IBF is overdue to order Spence to fight a mandatory, and right now, the top spot belongs to Kudratillo Abdukakhorov from Uzbekistan. “Showtime” Shawn Porter is number two, but he has a showdown with WBO champion Terence Crawford, November 20.

Of course, Ennis will need Abdukakhorov to turn down the call to fight Spence before he can get to him. Yet, imagine if it happens and how the entire boxing community would respond. Moreover, Boots believes a victor over Dulorme should make him mandatory.

“I’ll be mandatory after this fight.”

ENNIS MUST REMAIN FOCUSED

The unified champion has not been in the ring since 2020. Moreover, he suffered an eye injury that prevented him from fighting Manny Pacquiao. Spence is reportedly back in the gym training and is looking to return to the ring hopefully in 2022.

Keep in mind that Spence does not believe in tune-up fights. The unified champion backed up this belief by defeating two-divisional champion, and fellow stablemate, Danny “Swift” Garcia after suffering a life-threatening car accident. Furthermore, he reiterated these sentiments recently in wanting to return to the ring and not looking for a tune-up on social media.

One thing is for certain, nobody in their right mind thinks of Ennis as a tune-up. Several fans and pundits feel the young contender can beat any of the champions right now.

Priority number one is to take out Dulorme. This point can not be stressed enough. Ennis must stay laser-focused with a title opportunity so close within his grasp, and fans can rest assured the talented Philly fighter will bring his A-game.
