Shohjahon Ergashev Destroys Estrella in 88 seconds!
Undefeated super lightweight prospect Shohjahon Ergashev (18-0, 16 KOs) made a statement against Adrian Estrella (29-5, 24 KOs). He scored an eighty-eight-second first-round knockout at the WinnaVegas Casino & Resort in Sloan, Iowa.
Ergashev started round one fighting with more patience behind the jab; placing his shots to the head and body. This was atypical, as he normally comes out from the opening bell looking to deconstruct and destroy.
However, the power of the 28-year-old southpaw from Uzbekistan showed as he landed a sick hybrid left/uppercut to the ribs of Estrella. The shot sounded like a gunshot and left the underdog squirming in pain on the canvas.
Referee Paul Perry would count out the 29-year-old Fort Worth, Texas resident with 1:32 to go in the round.
Folks will argue Ergashev defeated a smaller, weaker opponent. Although, he is a guy to keep an eye on. Known as the “Descendant of Tamerlane”, he has been fighting out of the United States for the past two years under the tutelage of Javon “Sugar” Hill.
This is the same “Sugar” former unified heavyweight champion Tyson Fury hired as his new trainer for the rematch with WBC champ Deontay Wilder.
At 5’10 ½”, Ergashev is tall for the division with plenty of power in both hands. While his mindset is aggressive, it belies an underrated array of boxing skills.
With a style and temperament reminiscent of former WBA lightweight champion Orzubek “Gussie” Nazarov, he is looking at 2020 as his breakthrough year.
