A decision could not be made between Eva Wahlstrom and Ronica Jeffrey.
WBC Female super featherweight champion Eva Wahlstrom (22-1-2, 3KO) battled former IWBF champion Ronica Jeffrey (17-1, 1KO) to a draw on August 2 in Las Vegas.
The 38-year old champion was making her fifth title defense since winning the title back in 2015. This would also mark her second fight in the US after moving up to face then-lightweight unified champion Katie Taylor in 2018 in a losing effort.
Jeffrey, looking to become a two-time champion, was on a four-fight win-streak after suffering her sole loss to Carla Torres back in 2014.
Both women gave everything they had in this fight, offering plenty of action to please the crowd.
The challenger was the busier fighter, using the experience of a former champion. This was critical and part of the reason why one judge gave her every round.
The champion wasn’t going to be outdone. She landed hard punches with precision, providing enough moments in the fight to narrowly win one scorecard 96-94.
Although, the final judge scored it even at 95-95, making it a draw. The champion retained the title. Still, it was entertaining enough to where nobody would complain if they immediately rematched.
LOOKING FORWARD
If an immediate rematch doesn’t take place, the division isn’t short on fights that can be made.
Wahlstrom has stated that she doesn’t want to fight tomato cans. Luckily, she does have some options. There are intriguing unification fights that can be made with undefeated champion WBA Hyun Mi Choi, IBF Maiva Hamadouche or interim WBC titlist Elhem Mekhaled.
These are all very good fights that can take place at the end of the year.
It’s worth mentioning this fight was free at the Thomas and Mack center, promoted by former pound for pound champion Roy Jones Jr.
