Warren Outduels Hearn with a Record $41 Million Purse Bid!
Negotiations for the mandated battle between WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (31-0-1, 22 KO’s) and the mandatory challenger, Dillian Whyte (28-2, 19 KO’s), have been a war between Fury’s promoter, Queensberry, and Whyte’s promoter, Matchroom. 3Kings Boxing has kept tabs on the matter from the beginning, and here’s the latest.
THE BIG WINNER
On January 28, the WBC held the purse bid, and Frank Warren won with a whopping $41,052,000! Eddie Hearn of Matchroom bid $32,222,222. Because of a WBC ruling of an 80/20 percentage split between champion and challenger, this means that Fury’s purse will be $32.8 million while Whyte will receive $8.2 million. It was the largest purse bid in boxing history.
Fury is also co-promoted by Top Rank. In reaction to winning the purse bid, they released a statement on social media.
As a matter of order, Fury is not the lineal heavyweight champion. That aside, it’s big news that Warren won out. In various interviews, Hearn talked about winning the bid with no problems. But in the end, he was proven wrong in a big way.
The point of contention during this entire ordeal was a matter of money and the percentage split. Hearn felt the split should be 55/45 in favor of the champ. Team Fury, of course, believed they deserved a larger share.
WHEN AND WHERE WILL THE FIGHT TAKE PLACE?
Originally scheduled for January 21, the bid brings to conclusion months of accusations, speculations, and innuendo. While Top Rank has yet to announce a fight date and locale, Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales has emerged as the leading candidate as far as Venue, with April 23 an early target date.
