Gabriela Fundora Stops Alaniz in Seven in Undisputed Bout
In a battle of world champions, Gabriela “Sweet Poison” Fundora (15-0, 7 KOs) overcame adversity to ultimately stop Gabriela Celeste Alaniz (15-2, 6 KOs) in seven spirited rounds to become the undisputed women’s world flyweight champion at the Virgins Hotels in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The ladies traded heavy leather during the opening rounds. Midway through round three, Alaniz buckled Fundora with a left hook to the chin. However, from then on, Fundora took her game to another level and took over the contest. Sweet Poison began to use her advantages in height and reach and boxed more from the outside. Alaniz continued to march forward and showed all the heart in the world.
However, with fifty seconds to go in round seven, Fundora put Alaniz on the seat of her pants with a picture-perfect straight left hand. Seconds later, another Fundora left hand put Alaniz down for a second time in the contest. It was at this point that the referee wisely waved the fight over.
In the most difficult challenge of her career, Fundora showed the qualities of an elite fighter. In the process, the 22-year-old became the youngest fighter to become an undisputed champion in the modern era. After the fight, Sweet Poison said all options are open from 108-115 pounds.
