Ryan Garcia slaughters Francisco Fonseca in one!

Before the fans at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California could get comfortable in their seats, Ryan Garcia (20-0, 17 KOs) delivered his boxing version of a Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre as he decapitated Francisco Fonseca (25-3-2, 19 KOs) with a spectacular first-round knockout.

For the 21-year-old, it was an eye-opening stoppage that had the crowd going a collective wow in astonishment.

The confident and powerful Garcia began the fight with jabs and check-hooks. Known as “The Flash”, his left hook is the hardest punch in his arsenal. It was that punch (by way of a counter left hook) that exploded on the chin of Fonseca with 1:44 to go in the opening round.

Catching him right on the button, Fonseca went down hard with his head bouncing off the canvas. Referee Raul Caiz Sr smartly stepped in and waved off the fight with eighty seconds to go in the opening frame.

What makes this performance impressive is that Fonseca represented a step up in competition. He lasted 12-rounds with former IBF Super-Featherweight Tevin Farmer. He went eight rounds against Former WBA Super-Featherweight and current WBA “Regular” Lightweight champion Gervonta Davis.

The fact that Garcia was able to blast this same Fonseca out in one round, is what you call “making a statement!”

Additionally, this marks the second straight “step-up” fight in which Garcia obliterated his competition in the first round. In November 2019, he destroyed a challenger many thought would give him some trouble in Romero Duno.

Garcia’s win sets up a fight in July at the Staples Center in Los Angeles against Jorge Linares who scored a 4th round stoppage over Carlos Morales on the under-card.

Given how excellent both fighters looked, this should build up the excitement for fans anticipating that summer showdown.
