Ryan Garcia Looking to Make a Fight with Regis Prograis Next!
Reigning WBC junior welterweight champion Regis “Rougarou” Prograis (29-1, 14 KOs) doesn’t have to look far for potential opponents. One fighter who wants to see Prograis in the ring is “King” Ryan Garcia (23-1, 19 KOs), who made the following post on social media:
MAKING HIS CASE
Prograis is less than a month removed from defending the WBC belt for the first time with a split decision win over Danielito Zorilla on June 16. Since that victory, Rougarou has arguably become the center of the 140-pound landscape as multiple fighters have called him out.
Garcia is the latest to do so. He’s licking his wounds from a seventh-round stoppage loss to Gervonta “Tank” Davis on April 22. While Garcia is coming off a defeat, he’s in play for a fight with Prograis.
Some observers may say that promotional roadblocks are preventing such a contest. Garcia is with Golden Boy, while Prograis inked a deal with Matchroom in May 2023.
However, Garcia and Golden Boy have been at odds since the fight with Davis. In fact, the lawyer for Garcia claims that Golden Boy is in breach of contract. Were he to ultimately leave his current promoter, it would open the door for a fight with Prograis.
The reality is that Garcia is extremely popular and brings plenty of cache and fanfare whenever he steps into the ring. His fight with Davis proved his drawing power. Team Prograis is aware of what a title defense against Garcia would mean financially. This is something worth paying attention to.
