Golovkin v Munguia possible for 2021!
There are rumors circulating about a possible clash between hard-hitting middleweights. IBF middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (41-1-1, 36KOs) could be defending his title against Mexican puncher and former WBO junior middleweight champion Jamie Munguia (36-0, 29KOs).
This clash has “WAR” written all over it! Golovkin is coming off an easy win over his mandatory Kamil Szeremeta (21-1, 5KOs) on December 18. As for Munguia, he is coming off a win over longtime middleweight contender Tureano Johnson (21-3-1, 15KOs) on October 30. In that fight, he stopped Johnson in six rounds after Johnson suffered a nasty cut to his lip.
Munguia arrived on the scene in 2018 where he pummeled former WBO junior champion Sadam Ali (27-3, 14KOs) in four rounds showed himself to be a pressure fighter with big power. Pitting him against Golovkin would provide major fireworks.
The question must be asked, is Munguia ready for Golovkin? Even at the age of 38, Golovkin is a superior fighter with much experience. He also holds just as much, if not more, power than his younger adversary. Then there is his advantage in the skill department.
This fight is so intriguing because Golovkin is not the prime destructive fighter we grew accustomed to seeing. While Golovkin would prefer a third fight with his arch-enemy Canelo Alvarez, that may not be available. So, a fight with Munguia would suffice. It would also provide a chance to be in a fight of the year candidate that would likely end in a knockout!
As of now, it is all just rumors and speculation. As we enter 2021, I am sure we will start to learn more on what is next for the IBF middleweight champion.
