Ryan Garcia’s Trainer Joe Goossen Expects a Tough Fight Against Javier Fortuna!
When unbeaten lightweight contender Ryan “King Ry” Garcia (22-0, 18KOs) returns to the ring on July 16, he’ll do so against former WBA Regular junior lightweight champion Javier Fortuna (36-3-1-2, 25KOs). While Garcia is the favorite heading into this matchup, that doesn’t mean Fortuna should be dismissed as a live underdog. The Dominican fighter has a wealth of experience, having fought the likes of former champions Joseph Diaz, Robert Easter Jr., and Jason Sosa, to name a few. The task won’t be easy, something Garcia’s trainer, Joe Goossen, knows.
This will be the California-based trainer’s second fight as head trainer for Garcia. Their first outing wasn’t something to brag about, but nonetheless, they got the win. While Emmanuel Tagoe did more moving than fighting, Fortuna will bring the fight to Garcia. which will surely provide for a tougher night at the gig.
Goossen told Fight Hub TV the following about the difficulties he expects Fortuna to bring:
SOUTHPAW DILEMMA?!
“This fight here, we’ve got a really good opponent. You’ve got Javier Fortuna, who we know will fight. He’s a southpaw, so that always poses a little bit of a dilemma. So you’ve got to go out there and get the right sparring patterns. You know, drills on the floor have to center around left-handers, not right-handers. So that poses a little bit of a challenge.”
Back in 2021, Garcia fought and stopped former world title challenger Luke Campbell, who also happens to be a southpaw.
“So the bottom line is Fortuna, he’s got a lot of knockouts, I think 26 knockouts, 30 something wins. He’s a rough guy, head, shoulders, elbows, and you know he’ll give you a fight. So we’re not expecting just some walk in the park. We’ve got a very formidable guy against us with Fortuna and we’re training very hard.”
