Haney Believes Defeating Vasyl Lomachenko Will Help Build his Legacy
Devin “The Dream” Haney (29-0, 15 KOs) is unbeaten and the reigning undisputed lightweight champion of the world, but he feels like he’s still fighting for respect. As a result, there’s a great sense of urgency heading into his May 20 title defense against three-division champion Vasyl Lomachenko (17-2, 11 KOs). While speaking to the boxing media about the upcoming fight, the 25-year-old talked about why this fight is so important to him.
“I definitely feel like I will turn the non-believers into believers . . . This is a legacy fight.
This is the guy the world had as the number one pound for pound. This is the guy who was the greatest thing that they’d ever seen in their life, and they’ve never seen nothing like it. So, this means a lot to me. It will propel me.”
FULLY PREPARED
Lomachenko has been the subject of endless praise throughout his professional career. With speed, movement, ring IQ, and sense of timing, Loma has one of the more unique styles the sport has ever witnessed. But in his last outing, the 35-year-old had his share of struggles en route to a tough unanimous decision over Jamaine Ortiz in October 2022.
The undisputed champion believes Lomachenko has feasted on slow guys. He thinks that the speed and movement of Ortiz exposed some weaknesses in Loma.
Haney has fast hands and is an excellent mover in his own right. Having studied Lomachenko for several years, The Dream feels well-equipped to deal with anything Lomachenko brings to the ring on fight night.
Overall, Haney – Lomachenko has the makings of a fantastic pugilistic chess match. It’s a must-see fight for those who prefer skills, intelligence, and boxing artistry.
