Devin Haney: “Luke Campbell Shouldn’t Be Fighting For A Title”

This week, when the WBC reinstated Devin “The Dream” Haney (24-0, 18 KO’s) as their lightweight champion, it left Luke Campbell (20-3, 16 KO’s) in an odd position. After initially listing Haney as a “champion in recess”, the WBC ordered a fight between Campbell and Javier “El Abejon” Fortuna (35-2-1, 24 KO’s). The two were supposed to fight for the vacant title.

However, now that Haney has been reestablished as the formal champion, it’s only logical that The Dream will once again face Fortuna. Prior to his being named champion in recess, Fortuna was Haney’s mandatory challenger and the two teams were working on finalizing a fight. If these two do pick up where they left off, this will obviously leave Luke Campbell out in the cold.

NOT SO FAST, GOT TO BE QUICKER THAN THAT!

Before the news became public knowledge that Haney was once again the formal WBC lightweight champion, Campbell was quite confident that he would battle Fortuna for the title. In fact, he was so self-assured that he took several shots at Haney. Now it would seem that Campbell will have a bit of crow to eat.

Yet, even worse than that, Campbell will more than likely have to find another route to a title opportunity. However, according to Devin Haney, Campbell never should have had this shot to lose in the first place.

“I really don’t think that Luke Campbell should even be fighting for a world title, he’s coming off a loss. This would be his third shot at a world title. I think there are other people who deserve a world title shot more. And I saw in an interview that he did or that he said that I need to fall in line. Fall in line for what?”

“Your last fight you lost! He hasn’t even had a tune-up fight for him to be fighting for a world championship again. It makes no sense. We were in line to fight, he chose to go a different route and as of now I’ll be looking to fight Javier Fortuna because he is the mandatory and Luke Campbell can fall in line.”

UP IN THE AIRS

For the current time, just like the fighters themselves, the boxing public will have to wait and see what the WBC comes up with next to resolve this cumbersome situation. Let’s just hope that we can come to a logical final decision soon! Stay tuned to 3kingsboxing for all the latest boxing news and updates.
