Devin Haney: “Even without a belt, Garcia is a big fight!”
When it comes to young promoter, boxer and WBC world lightweight champion “in-recess” Devin “The Dream” Haney (24-0, 16 KO’s), there is no question that he is looking for the big fights. Naturally, he would love to mix it up with his fellow divisional champions.
Unfortunately for The Dream, it looks like he will have to continue playing the waiting game because IBF world lightweight champion Teofimo “El Brooklyn” Lopez (15-0, 12 KO’s) is slated to fight WBO and WBA world lightweight champion Vasiliy “Hi-Tech” Lomachenko (14-1, 10 KO’s) in their next outing.
Luckily for Haney, those are not the only two boxers on his radar. Despite the fact that he is not a belt holder, The Dream has great interest in colliding with lightweight contender Ryan “KingRy” Garcia (20-0, 17 KO’s). The two have maintained regular and respectful interactions with one another since their amateur days. Before turning professional, the two skilled athletes even traded wins and losses.
WHY WAIT, NOW’S THE TIME!
Since turning pro, both Haney and Garcia have successfully maintained their rapid ascent in the sport. This is why, due to the challenge he presents, and the fans that he commands, The Dream doesn’t feel there is any point letting a fight with Garcia grow any longer. In the savvy Californians mind, now is as good a time as any to test his wits against KingRy.
“Me and Ryan that’s like a huge fight, you know? Like belts don’t even really matter in that fight to be honest with you because the fight is huge!”
A WORK IN PROGRESS
Regardless of how much Haney is looking to make this fight now, it simply may not be in the cards. The origin of this gloomy forecast stems from comments made from Eddie Reynoso, Garcia’s chief second, who stated he believed Garcia was still several fights away from making the mega-fights.
“I mean his coach is, I don’t know, I wouldn’t want to say he isn’t telling the truth because I want the fight! His coach has his opinion, and you have to respect his opinion at the end of the day. I hope that he is not saving Ryan because I want him to tell Ryan that he is 100% ready and that he should fight me because I want to make the fight happen.”
Only time will tell if Haney can grab one of the several bouts that he is looking for. Yet on the outside looking in, it feels like The Dream still has a bit of a wait ahead of him.
