Triller drops the ball on Teofimo Lopez vs George Kambosos fight

DAZN promoter Eddie Hearn just received an early holiday gift thanks to the IBF. The organization has declared Triller in breach of contract, taking away their right to promote unified lightweight champion “The Takeover” Teofimo Lopez versus #1 contender “Ferocious” George Kambosos Jr.

Hearn is very excited to have DAZN showcasing the fight. He took to social media to inform fans of a new date and venue to be announced in the future.

HOW DID WE GET HERE?

Earlier in the year, Triller shocked everyone by winning the purse bid for the right to host Teofimo Lopez and IBF #1 challenger George Kambosos. What followed next was a rollercoaster ride of date changes that have given fans a serious headache. The fight was originally to take place on June 5. The date was changed again, in an attempt to avoid competing with the Floyd Mayweather v Logan Paul exhibition, to June 19.

Next, Lopez would test positive for COVID-19, pushing the fight back even further to August 14. Yet again, there was a change for October 5 which prompted the IBF to issue a warning to Triller.

“After considering the written submissions from both camps, the IBF has ruled the following:

The IBF will not default Triller on the Purse Bid at this time. There is no IBF rule that governs the timeframe a bout must take place after a rescheduled bout. The Lopez vs. Kambosos bout must take place on or before October 17, 2021. The Lopez vs. Kambosos bout must take place in location and venue that does not require quarantine.” ~ IBF President Darryl Peoples

TIRED OF WAITING

Following that, there was a set date for Monday October 4. Right on queue, Triller changed the date again to avoid competing with Monday Night Football. Finally, a date was set for October 16. Kambosos, frustrated with the rollercoaster date changes, asked the IBF to find Triller in breach of contract.

With Eddie Hearn in control of everything, fans will finally see these two fights in the ring by the end of the year. Triller dropped the ball big-time with the opportunity to host a high-profile championship fight. Moreover, they will come under heavy scrutiny, making it hard for them in future purse bids.
