Eddie Hearn Says Jaime Munguia in Talks to Fight Dmitry Bivol June 10

The boxing community has been calling for former WBO junior middleweight champion Jaime Munguia (41-0, 33KO) to fight a top fighter in the sport. Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn claims fans could see Munguia versus WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol in June.

In 2022, Munguia dropped the name of the WBA champion, when asked by fans who he would like to fight this year. This statement sent waves around the boxing community as fans believed Team Munguia was joking. Furthermore, he was ranked number one at middleweight by the WBC and WBO but never pursued a fight with champions Jermall Charlo or then-champion Demetrius Andrade.

HEARN REVEALS TEAM MUNGUIA WANTS TO FIGHT BIVOL

During an interview with Boxing Social, Hearn revealed the match-up is under consideration for the summer. Moreover, he stated it was Team Munguia that wanted to make the fight.

“It’s a fight we’re exploring for June 10. They want the fight [Team Munguia]. We’re just looking at it. Jaime Munguia has gone from, and I rate Jaime Munguia by the way, he’s a good fighter, but he’s gone from fighting absolutely no one to wanting to fight Dmitry Bivol at 175. Quite Bizarre! We’re looking at it.”

Munguia has not been in the ring since running over unknown Gonzalo Coria in November 2022. It appears they were serious about wanting to fight the WBA champion.

Bivol at the moment is without a dance partner. He was hoping to fight unified champion Artur Beterbiev for undisputed. However, the WBC derailed the undisputed showdown by ordering Callum Smith as the mandatory.

Plan B was to have him make a title defense against Joshua Buatsi, but Buatsi left Matchroom Boxing for its rival, Boxxer, essentially killing the fight. Moreover, the rematch with undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is off the table since he’s tied up with John Ryder.
