Eddie Hearn Responds To Oscar De La Hoya Comments on Canelo Alvarez

Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn wasted no time in hitting back at Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya for comments about undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s level of opposition.

The Golden Boy boss criticized his former protégé for picking low-level opponents, starting with the upcoming title defense against mandatory challenger John Ryder. This sparked outrage within the Mexican undisputed champion’s fanbase, as expected.

EDDIE HEARN DEFENDS CANELO ALVAREZ

Hearn, who works alongside Alvarez, took exception to De La Hoya’s claim. During an interview with Fight Hub TV, he spoke passionately in defense of the undisputed champion.

“Billy Joe Saunders, unification. Caleb Plant, undisputed fight. Dmitry Bivol, who Oscar De La Hoya said they’re stupid taking that fight. That was such a tough fight. They’re idiots, but all of sudden he’s taking easy fights.”

“Oscar will say whatever suits him. I don’t think half the time he knows what he’s saying, but he will never speak honestly about Canelo Alvarez, because, at the end of the day, Canelo Alvarez left Golden Boy.”

HEARN POINTS TO RAMIREZ AND MUNGUIA LACK OF OPPOSITION

The British promoter advised De La Hoya to look in the mirror at the lower-tier opponents matched up against his fighters.

“I think he needs to look at some of his own matchmaking, particularly Zurdo Ramirez this weekend, and particularly Jaime Munguia, which has been absolutely horrific and embarrassing.”

In fairness, Ramirez is coming off the first defeat of his career against WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol. He is fighting journeyman Gabriel Rosado next. This is common for fighters coming off tough losses, to take a light touch.

Munguia, on the other hand, is being treated with kid gloves. Fans have been screaming for him to step up and fight one of the top guys in the middleweight division.

Boxing fans can expect De La Hoya to respond in some fashion as this is far from over.
