Eddie Hearn Talks Building Saunders and Opponents
The cat is out of the bag and the world knows Billy Joe Saunders has aligned himself with Matchroom Promotion.
Now, the natural question is “what’s next”. Saunders himself has stated that his central rationale for joining Matchroom was easier access to high profile fights.
There is no denying that Saunders is a terrific talent. There also is no getting around the fact that ultimately, Superb has a rather thin resume. His new promoter, Eddie Hearn, has every intention to change that reality.
When speaking on the notion of who Saunders may face next, Hearn explained how perhaps it is Superb’s skill that has prevented certain fights from coming to fruition. Like it or not, ‘risk versus reward’ is something that fighters and their handlers take very seriously in the sport.
Personally, Hearn is of the mind that opponents frequently view Billy Joe Saunders as more trouble than he is worth. This is why the verbose promoter feels like being able to throw big bucks around will make a notable difference moving forward.
“Obviously he wants those big fights at this stage of his career and it’s up to us to deliver those. I don’t see an issue with delivering those.
“I don’t think Billy Joe, like Demetrius Andrade, probably like Callum Smith as well are fighters that people don’t necessarily queue up to fight. You have to make sure those fights are financially valuable to the opponent because they are very good fighters.
“So, they might end up fighting each other.”
Regardless of who Saunders steps in the ring with next, Hearn has designs to have Superb back in the ring later this year.
It goes without saying that Hearn would prefer a decorated name and fighter to pit Saunders against. However, he is more concerned with keeping his new charge visible to the public and active.
“He will box at the end of October or early November either in America or the UK. We decide that this week. And you know DAZN are very, very excited.
“Sky are very, very excited and Billy needs to be in those big fights. I think that 2020 particularly is the break out year.”
In terms of who Team Saunders is targeting, they are certainly aiming for the sky! Even though Hearn and crew are going for the gusto, they are mindful to temper their enthusiasm in order to remain practical and realistic.
“There are some big fights that he would jump into straightaway. Canelo doesn’t have an opponent yet. That’s a fight that we will be putting forward too.
“You know, we’ve sort of been to Canelo and offered him Callum Smith and Demetrius Andrade and now we’ll do it again with Billy Joe Saunders.
“Gennady Golovkin has a fight in October. Daniel Jacobs is returning, Demetrius Andrade could fight in the UK or the US as well. Will he have one of those mega-fights in October, November? Possibly.
“But I think there is a good chance that he’ll be out and then going again in February, March in a big, big mega-fight.”
No matter what happens next for Saunders, 3kingsboxing will continue to stay on top of all the new and reports the latest developments as they emerge.
